The 84th Fighter Squadron of the 8th Air Force's 78th Fighter Group was the standard fighter squadron for ground attack and bomber raid protection missions during the summer of 1944.
The group was initially assigned to Duxford airfield in April 1943 and equipped with Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. The group's aircraft were identified by their magnificent black/white checkerboard on the engine cowlings and comprised the following squadrons:
- 82nd Fighter squadron coded (MX)
- 83rd Fighter squadron coded (HL)
- 84th Fighter squadron coded (WZ)
From Duxford, the 78th squadron flew numerous escort missions for Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers, which attacked industries, submarine dockyards and launch sites for V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets in preparation for the Allies' planned invasion of Europe.
The group particularly distinguished itself on the morning of June 6, 1944, by interdicting enemy movements behind the bridgehead, strafing and bombing airfields, trains, vehicles and any enemy movement on the roads leading to Normandy.
The group contributed to the Saint-Lô breakthrough in July 1944, which marked a decisive advance for Allied forces and a major turning point in the Battle of Normandy. The operation broke the German defensive line and paved the way for the liberation of occupied France.
