Guide des taillesPierre Clostermann, born February 28, 1921 in Curitiba (Brazil), died March 22, 2006 in Montesquieu-des-Albères (Pyrénées-Orientales), was a French aviator who distinguished himself during the Second World War.
He learned to fly at the age of 16. Five years later, he managed to get his pilot's license validated in the United States and reached London in 1942.
Assigned to the Mulhouse escadrille of the Alsace group, he fought his first victorious battle over Cherbourg on May 13, 1943. A few months later, he was seconded to Royal Air Force squadron 602, where he flew 138 missions. He took part in the Normandy landings, shooting down four German aircraft between Cabourg and Caen. He then multiplied his fighter and fire support missions over Germany; seriously wounded but safe, he was then appointed commander of the RAF's 122nd Wing.
By May 8, 1945, Captain Clostermann, aged 24, had flown 393 offensive missions and won 33 victories, earning him the title of "France's leading fighter". He also earned 18 commendations. Knight of the Legion of Honor on March 1, 1945, promoted to Officer and Commander on June 6, 1946, he was elevated to Grand Officer in 1958, after a final mission in Algeria. He was made Grand Cross in 1988.
