Raoul Gervais Lufbery was born on March 14, 1885 in Chamalières in the Puy-de-Dôme region of France to an American father and a French mother.
During his youth, he had several jobs and left France in 1905 to travel in Africa, the Ottoman Empire and Eastern Europe. He embarked for the United States in 1907 where after his military service he traveled between Hong Kong, Ceylon, Singapore, Bombay and Indochina.
At the end of August 1914, Lufbery enlisted in the Foreign Legion, the only possibility to join the French army because of his American nationality.
In May 1916, he joined the newly created La Fayette squadron, composed of volunteer American pilots and a few Frenchmen. It was within this squadron, whose emblem was a Sioux head, that he fought on all the fronts from the Somme to Verdun, participating in all the major battles of the French army and shooting down his first plane on July 31, 1916 in the sky over Étain, the first success of a long list that would make him an ace.
He died on May 19, 1918 in Maron, Meurthe-et-Moselle.
