Paul Tarascon joined the army in 1901. In 1911, while learning to fly, he crashed due to a broken flight control and had to have his right foot amputated, which later earned him the nickname "the ace with the wooden leg".

Despite his handicap, he joined the air force as a volunteer in the first days of the war. In January 1915, he became an instructor and one of his students was Georges Guynemer.

Asking to be sent into combat, he was assigned to the 62 squadron in 1916. It was within the 62 squadron that Tarascon won his 12 victories. He successively flew several types of Nieuports that he nicknamed "Zigomar" and ended the war at the controls of a SPAD S.VII.

During the Second World War, Paul Tarascon was mobilized in 1939 as a liaison officer. Sent home after the armistice, he joined the first Resistance networks. He hosted British agents in his villa, supplied the maquis and trained resistance fighters in clandestine action.
