Memorial Flight

Created in March 1988, Memorial Flight is a non-profit association composed of volunteers whose goal is to preserve and enrich the French aeronautical heritage. In collaboration with the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace, their work focuses on a rich period, both from a technological and human point of view, namely the First World War.

Started with the complex restoration of the SPAD XIII C1, Memorial Flight flies today a Fokker DVII, a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter 1B2, a Morane AI, a Be2f and a LVG C.VI.

The Spad XIII n° 4377

Built in February 1918 by the Kellner company of Levallois, this aircraft is one of the last survivors of the 8000 built.

Recovered from the wreckage by Jean Salis in the 70's, its restoration started in 1988 and it was given to the association in 1990. It was restored in four years. The fuselage and the engine are original, but an important work of reconstruction was necessary for the canopy. Everything was redone, checked and reassembled with the concern of scrupulously respecting the standards of the time, including the linen canvas and the official camouflage scheme of the military aeronautics of 1918. Only the metal parts, the lower roundels and the flag are painted, the rest being covered with pigmented coating in accordance with the original. It is equipped with a reproduction of a lightning propeller made with an original propeller belonging to the Air and Space Museum.

It took to the air for the first time in 73 years on May 3, 1991, bearing the colors of Charles Henri Dolan, last survivor of the La Fayette squadron.

10 years after its rebirth, the Spad XIII came back to our workshop for a major overhaul (engine overhaul, structure, new radiator, re-canvas) and a return to a higher standard of restoration.

It is now in the colors of Brigadier Trémeau, SPA 83 "Les dragons", January 1918.

It is the only original Spad XIII in flying condition in the world and the oldest known to date.
