BARNSTORMER presents the X-Plane collection. These experimental aircraft, developed in the greatest secrecy, have made it possible to achieve the greatest advances in aeronautics. Let's pay tribute to the research, the challenges and the dangers that so many men have faced in their quest to push back the frontiers of knowledge.

Let's delve into the history of the Griffon II, a supersonic fighter prototype developed with the aim of reaching Mach 2 by 1960.

Developed in the '50s as an advanced trainer and multi-purpose fighter, the Griffon II is distinguished by its aerodynamic silhouette and delta wings, offering great maneuverability and supersonic performance. Although it did not go into series production, this aircraft contributed to the evolution of military aviation by integrating technological innovations into avionics systems and providing a training platform for pilots. Its versatile design, capable of carrying out a variety of fighter and attack missions, influenced the development of contemporary aircraft such as the Mirage 2000 and Rafale, laying the foundations for strategic thinking in aircraft design.

One of the most famous Griffon II test pilots is André Turcat. On board the Griffon II, test pilots attempt to set a world record over a distance of 100 km in a closed circuit. For the test flights, Armand Jacquet and André Turcat take turns flying the circuit. On February 25, 1959, in front of the French and German press, the two pilots alternated record attempts. A few days later, the results were officially announced: André Turcat had beaten the international speed record for 100 km on a closed circuit, with the highest average speed of 1,643 kph. The 97th flight of the Griffon II lasted no more than 3 minutes. For this feat, the Harmon Trophy, which rewards the best aviators, was presented to him by the Vice-President of the United States, Richard Nixon.
