The 587th Bombardment Squadron was part of the USAF's 394th Bombardment Group.
Formed in 1943, the 587th was equipped with B-26 Marauder bombers. It took part in tactical bombing missions in Europe, mainly in support of Allied forces on the ground. The squadron was active in major operations such as the Normandy landings in June 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Despite heavy losses, the 587th bravely continued its missions right up to the end of the war. Its courageous service and contribution to the war effort remain an important part of the history of military aviation during the Second World War.
The 587th was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for bravery and exemplary service.
