The Corsair was developed at the very beginning of World War II to replace the aging Wildcat.

Vought's engineers' brief was to design the smallest possible aircraft around the largest engine available at the time, the Wasp R-2800, an 18-cylinder double-star engine developing 1,850 hp at takeoff.

At the end of the 2nd World War, France, eager to rebuild its military aviation, was allocated 25 AU-1s from the USMC by the Military Assistance Program (MAP). They entered service on January 15, 1953 and were used in Indochina, with the last flying examples returning to the United States in late 1954.

Following a request from the French Navy, Vought studied the development of a version specially built for France, equipped with the latest generation Wasp engine, the R-2800-43W developing more than 2,100 hp...the F4U-7 Corsair was born.

Delivered to the ranks of naval aviation units from 1952, 94 F4U-7 Corsairs were used by the Navy, notably during the Suez crisis with Operation Musketeer. It was the first aircraft to equip the 17F squadron.

All French Corsairs were retired from service at the end of 1964. Some were displayed in museums and others were acquired by enthusiasts.

Here is a polo shirt inspired by a Corsair F4U-7 with the Operation Musketeer identification stripes, operating on board the R96 "LaFayette" aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean in late August 1956.
