Max Guedj obtained his lawyer's diploma in parallel with his civil pilot's licence in 1938. When war was declared in 1939, he was mobilised as a soldier.
Rallying to Free France, he joined the FFL as a student pilot. After a period of training at RAF schools, he was seconded to Squadron 248 (February 1942). He joined Coastal Command where he flew twin-engine Bristol Beaufighters and De Havilland Mosquitos. He took part in the attack on the German cruiser Prinz Eugen (17 May 1942), then flew numerous missions in Norway, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
His exceptional bravery and valor earned him the respect and admiration of the British. He was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander (Lieutenant-Colonel) in December 1944, one of the highest ranks a foreigner had achieved in the RAF. He was awarded two DFCs (Distinguished Flying Cross) and a DSO (Distinguished Service Order). He was commended six times to the Air Force and the Free French Forces and received the highest French decorations.
On 15 January 1945 he took off on his last mission: the attack on a 6,000-ton tanker carrying high-octane aviation gasoline for enemy airfields in northern Norway. This mission could shorten the duration of the war by two months. The difficulty is that the ship is in the port of Leirvik, at the bottom of Romback Fjord (also called Narvik Fjord), which is a continuation of Ofotfjord. It is a very well defended area by the German Flak and fighter. Max Guedj attacked with his nineteen De Havilland Mosquitos of squadrons 235 and 248, despite a Flak barrage from four escort ships and the interception of twenty Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters. The tanker was destroyed, but Max Guedj's plane exploded.
