14-P-1 PBY-5 Catalina was flown by Ens. Tanner of VP-14 on December 7, 1941, with instructions to "remain alert during this time of great tension. Hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Tanner spotted a miniature Japanese submarine attempting to enter the harbor. The attacker was destroyed by a combined attack from Tanner and the destroyer USS Ward.
