Developed during the Second World War, the AD-4N Skyraider was mainly involved in air operations during the Vietnam War, where the aircraft proved to be perfectly suited for close air support (CAS), but also for search and rescue (SAR) missions.

It became apparent early on in the conflict that solo helicopters were too vulnerable to carry out combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. Skyraiders were employed as early as 1965, escorting a pair of SAR helicopters, most often the HH-53 'Super Jolly Green Giant'.

Initially assigned to US Navy A-1 Skyraiders, they were quickly replaced in mid-August 1965 by a brand new unit formed for the occasion, the 1st Air Commando Squadron (ACS) based at the Royal Thai Air Base (RTAFB) in Udorn, Thailand, to cover F-105 air strikes in high-risk areas. This move marked the beginning of the US Air Force's (USAF) sophisticated CSAR programme.

As noted in the book 'The A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam' the famous call sign 'Sandy' was created in late 1965 by Captain J.W. 'Doc' George on a ferry flight of his A-1 Skyraider to reposition to the Udorn area. In fact, this was George's departure call sign at Bien Hoa Air Base, after landing at Udorn, he was asked what call sign he wished to use during his tour of duty. George's answer was 'Sandy'.

Not only was the call sign retained by George's successors, but it also became the call sign for any Skyraider assigned to the SAR mission.
